BY THE TIME THE MEETING had wrapped up, the sun had gone down and George was arriving home at dark. He did not often see such late evenings, but the board could not arrive on a single decision today, and their discussions had gone late into the evening.

He was hungry, wished to get out of his coat and wanted to spend time with his paper he had not finished reading that morning.

And my wife.

How had he forgotten he had one? He supposed it was such a novel thing, he would not feel so guilty over his forgetfulness. But now that he thought on Mina, he wanted to see her too.

Very much.

What had she done today? He could only imagine her milking the goat and installing herself in the kitchen to make cheese. Perhaps she had brought home another kitten to bite him.

He found himself whistling as he walked the path to his front door. Inside was quiet as always, and he breathed a sigh of relief not to be listening to the arguments of his fellow directors all night as well.

He removed his hat and handed it to a maid, who stood waiting. “Dinner has been saved for you, sir. The rest have already eaten. Will you take it in the dining room or on a tray in your bed?”

“The dining room is fine. And please make sure my paper is there as well. I just need a minute to clean up.”

She bobbed a curtsy, and he went upstairs, listening to the silence of the house that was almost cheerful. Perhaps that was only his thoughts of home. He was a very content man at the moment.

In his room, he quickly shucked his coat and stretched the kinks in his shoulders that had knotted there after his tense meeting. He rolled up his sleeves and washed, tidied his hair, and turned to leave the room.

That was when he saw it.

Something furred at the end of his bed.

Dear God, what could it be? It looked mangy, like it might be rabid. He almost let out a shout but then lunged for the thing, thinking to hit it.

The beast leaped up and landed on all fours on his mattress. George went for it but was brought up short by a sneeze. Loose hair floated in the air, causing him to sneeze again.

Then he got a good look at the animal. A dog. A blasted dog in his room! And now on his bed, doing a turnabout before lying down.

George could only think this was Mina’s doing. His sisters, after all, were not prone to bringing home pets, but in only two days, his little wife had bestowed three upon the family.

He stared at the dog. It closed its eyes and gave a huff before falling asleep.

George shook his head and then went out of the room, leaving the door cracked in hopes it was gone by the time he returned. Downstairs he found his sisters in the sitting room. He pierced them in his stare.
